From the street you can see the house needs paint. As you get closer it’s obvious the house is going to need a lot of attention.
Removing all the loose paint helps prevent ‘voids’ under the new paint.
Proper scraping and priming have already created a stark change in curb appeal. As a matter of fact, after showing the house a few times, it was right after this stage the owners got an offer on the house. We’re not saying it was our paint job that sold the house but….
When it was retrofitted, the dryer vent was routed to come out in this corner – the darkest part of the entrie exterior. All thehot moisture from the dryer over the years has loosened a LOT of the paint.
Luckily, we were able to scrape away the loose and peeling paint with minimal siding replacement. When your paint gets this bad you never know how much replacement of the sub-straight will be necessary.
Though priming over the old paint will seal the raw spots it can’t completely smooth the texture. We decided on a flat paint in order to help create smoother finished look.
Up close you can obviously see the ridges regardless of sheen, but a shinier finish will cause all those edges to ‘flash’ from a distance.
The loose paint removed from the house. When you have this much loose and peeling paint it’s actually CAUSING more damage than doing much protecting… The loose paint can trap moisture inside – causing more detrioration of the wood underneath.
This 100+ year-old house in Loveland has seen better days. Its original cedar lap-siding has severe deferred maintenance issues – meaning the owners the last few decades neglected to protect it. The current owners are transferring to California and need it cleaned up for sale.
Because it was so badly neglected, much of the old paint is loose and hanging from the house or falling away completely. We’ll be thoroughly scraping the entire exterior to remove all the old paint before priming and painting. Because of the severe paint chipping, we’ll be using a flat finish and darker color over the body to ‘even’ the texture and a low-sheen for the trim.
